Following the successful release of our first major update, we’re excited to introduce Devolutions Gateway’s second major release of the year: version 2025.2. Below, we’ll explore how the Gateway’s new features can benefit your workflow. (To see all updates, refer to the release notes.)

Improved system certificate selection with certificate caching

Certificates are a cornerstone of securing connections, and previously, Gateway’s selection of the certificates to use from the Windows Certificate System Store could lead to some less-than-ideal edge scenarios. We have improved the selection of the system store.

Furthermore, we have implemented basic certificate caching so that the Gateway does not constantly access the certificate store, significantly reducing system calls. For the technically minded, we cache a certificate for only 45 seconds, so certificate changes still occur quickly.

Addition of --config-path parameter

The Gateway executable now supports a --config-path parameter to improve flexibility. Previously, Gateway would look for the configuration file in a predefined location or via the DGATEWAY_CONFIG_PATH environment variable. Now, you can specify a custom configuration path, making Gateway more portable.

VNC improvements in Gateway Standalone

Gateway Standalone is our free, web-based interface for those who want to try out Devolutions Gateway. To support this use case, we’ve added several improvements. For the VNC protocol, you can now select the codec used for the connection and toggle cursor pseudo-encoding (which determines whether the cursor is “baked” into the image).

ARD improvements in Gateway Standalone

Similar to VNC, ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) also sees improvements. You can now optimize your connection with new resolution quality and quality mode settings. Devolutions Gateway’s ARD capability offers a unique and powerful way to control your macOS systems remotely.

RDP improvements in Gateway Standalone

Rounding out the set of improvements is RDP, which now supports both Unicode mode and dynamic display. With all of these protocol enhancements, Standalone continues to evolve as the best free alternative to Apache Guacamole and Remote Desktop Gateway.

It is free to use, but for those seeking advanced logging, role-based access control (RBAC), and additional protocol support, upgrading to the managed Gateway unlocks even more powerful features.

  • Proxy-based credential injection

  • Virtual Gateways in DVLS

  • Enhanced load balancing

  • Expanded network scanning

About Devolutions Gateway

Devolutions Gateway offers a modern alternative to legacy VPNs by only forwarding the traffic of the connecting service after authentication and authorization, enhancing both performance and scalability. Gateway ensures native performance while securely relaying RDP, VNC, ARD, SSH, Telnet, PowerShell, and web protocols, safeguarding internal resources from external access.

This lightweight service, installable on Windows or Linux, eliminates the hassle of deploying agents to every target system. Devolutions Gateway integrates seamlessly with Devolutions Server, Devolutions Hub, and Remote Desktop Manager (RDM) for a complete remote connection solution.

The recently released standalone Devolutions Gateway provides a free alternative to solutions like Apache Guacamole through an easy-to-install service, allowing fast web-based access to internal resources. For team integration, Devolutions Gateway can be combined with Devolutions Server or Hub and Remote Desktop Manager for authorized just-in-time external access to resources in segmented networks.
